Once again puertorico-tonight.com has to step a little bit out of what we should report(the nightlife) and before everyone start getting wrong information or not precise commentaries, we would like to inform you in this section about what you´ve probably hear on the news these coupple of days.
On Saturday the 28th of July the news were that even with the high temperatures that we have been suffering those days (around 40ºC) the fire was very active but only burning trees on the forrest on the center of Gran Canaria, not houses or touristic resources where affected so far. Also on that day the police (Guardia Civil) arrested the person who declare himself guilty that he set up the fire on porpuse.
Late on Sunday the 29th late in the night (2 days after the fire started) around 9.00 pm the Authorities announced that in the folowing hours was very possible that the fire, that already had 4 important locations, would be on control and on a later stage will be extingished, so according all the official info it was only a matter of hours the stopping of such a catastrophe.
Well the worst was only to come, on the early hours of the Monday the 30th before sunrise (3 days after the fire start) the weather conditions changed and the very strong hot wind (with speed over 70 Km/h ) start blowing constantly and the temperature reach 45ºC, so it make it impossible for the 10 helicopter that were stingishing the fire to fly. So here it comes the big drama that we were suffering. The fire out of control and the air media could not help.
The fire reach some residences in Mogan town and at least 60 houses has been on fired, around 2.000 people has been evacuated from Mogan town to the seaside locations. But not only Mogan, this afetrnoon the fire was leading other places where people are living such us, Tasarte, Tunte, Ayagaures and so on.
Important to mention is that there hasn´t been any human lost so far, but only material lost full of sentimental values.
From puertorico-tonight.com, we would like to apreciate the value job that everyone up in the fire are doing 24 hours a day since last Friday to stop this disaster, some of them on a very serious situation of risk. From Police, to Firemen, Civil Protection, Guardia Civil, everyone on the helicopters fleet and simply to everyone trying to keep care of our beatiful island set on fire but a senseless idiot.
We would like to cover this catastrophe on the way to inform you every five minutes how is it going, but our resources are not so good as other sites. Anyway whenever there are news (good or bad) we would like to keep you updated.
The most sold paper in Gran Canaria is Canarias7 and we recommend you to visit their site were they cover the situación on the same way that we would wish (only in Spanish). If you would like to have a look, then simply click here: www.canarias7.es If you would like to drop few lines to support the authorities to stop the fire, please send a e-mail to info@puertorico-tonight.com. We would appreciate that.
The situation is still very dangerous but after 100 hours of working all the fire fighters are on the way first to control the fire and afterwards proceed to extinghish it. It´s been said that one third of the forrest in Gran Canaria has been burned on this fire. If the weather condition don´t get worst very probably in few hours the fire will be controlled. Pity the helicopters cannot fly on the night time.
support messages sent to info@puertorico-tonight.com I can't believe my wonderful Gran Canaria is on fire! I have been so many times and know many people who live and work there. Coming back again 13th August. I am thinking about you all and hoping you are all safe. To the guys fighting the fires - keep up the great work you're doing a terrific job. by Sue (UK) Tue 31st of July 2007 18.57 pm
The dimension of the disaster gets bigger when you count that Tenerife fire that started 2 days ago is still not on control. The following image is a satellite pictue the 2 columns of clouds above Tenerife and Gran Canaria are not such clouds, is the smoke from both fires.

The situation is absolutly on control, in Gran Canaria it means that the size of the fire will not increase anymore, but the fire is not completly extingished so far, that will take few hours. Also the temperature is finally dropping and the strong winds are dissapearing which makes it easy for the helicopters mission that so far where limited on their duty because the strong winds.

support messages sent to info@puertorico-tonight.com I am a regular visitor to the island mainly Puerto Rico and It made me very upset when I saw on the news at home that your beautiful island was on fire. It is upsetting to think that people have been evacuated from ther homes and lost personal belongings due to some mindless idiot causing the fire.
The fire at the moment is under control in the both island (Tenerife and Gran Canaria). Only few hours to consider them completly extingished. In Gran Canaria the face of the people returning home is a drama already, also some specialist announce that it will take at least 10 years for the forrest to reach the same amount of trees. For the last 20 years the Canarian Authorities has been proceeding to regenerate the forrest and in 3 days of fire, all their work for the past 20 years became totally useless. by Admin Thu 02nd August 9.15 pm
support messages sent to info@puertorico-tonight.com My thoughts go out to everyone touched by the fire.. And thanks for covering this at your site. Kristin (Norway) Thu 02nd of August 9.57 pm
La Caja de Canarias (the most important Canarian bank) has open a bank account where people can put money to start financing the recovering of all the trees that has been burnt on the last days during the fire, if you would like to cooperate the bank account is 2052-8130-20-3310077609. by Admin Fri 03rd August 3.20 am
